How Safe are Your Baby Skin Care Products - What's Inside the Bottle?

What's in Your Baby's Skin Care Products?

By , About.com Guide

Do you ever wonder what is in skin care products such as baby wash, shampoo or lotion that you put on your baby? Maybe you have looked at the ingredient list, but really, how many of us can understand what it all means? You hear startling headlines about skin care ingredients causing a greater risk of cancer. Other reports tell us that a common ingredient in cosmetics is also used to degrease car engines. Shouldn't we know more about what we're choosing to put on our baby? Seeing our body is like a sponge, what we put on it goes in it.

In 2004, Skin Deep was launched. Knowing that the FDA doesn't fully regulate what goes in skin care products, nor do they require companies to test for safety before they are sold, Skin Deep took over where the government was lacking. A database with 27,790 products and 7,207 ingredients, you can be pretty sure your baby's (and your) personal care items are on there. With a Parents Buying Guide, they do the work for you. You'll get safer options for all your child and baby care needs.

In conjunction to the testing and reporting they do, they also let you know if each brand tests on animals and if they are a member of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics began in 2002 asking cosmetics companies to sign a compact that states they are following guidelines set by the organization. The first paragraph reads:

That all of the cosmetics and personal care products made by our company anywhere in the world meet the formulation standards and deadlines set by the European Union Directive 76/768/EEC to be free of chemicals that are known or strongly suspected of causing cancer, mutation or birth defects.

See a list of almost 800 brands who have (and who have not) pledged to keep us all safe when using their products. Maybe you'll be happy to find your favorites on the list, but perhaps you'll make changes to find new favorites.
