Skin by Monica Olsen: Refine Deep Penetrating Clay Cleanser is an all-natural facial cleanser best suited for normal to oily skin. At the time of this review, it is a tube with 4.5 ounces priced at $16.95.
The cleanser's rock star ingredient is Kaolin clay, which is often found in skin care products, especially clay masks for combo or oily skin. Kaolin effectively rids excess oil, detoxifies and slightly exfoliates skin, so it's perfect in a mask or facial cleanser.
The cleanser itself is white in color and a creamy consistency. Skin by Monica does not use any artificial fragrances or colors, so the color is natural and there is just a slight trace of the ingredients' natural scent to it. Almost undetectable.
How to Use
The directions state to put a thin layer of product on your moist skin and leave on for 2 minutes before rinsing off. It claims to be gentle enough to use every day.

Things We Love:
- Price: $16.95 for an all-natural, eco-friendly skin care product is almost unheard of these days. Planet-healthy usually means expensive, but not here.
- Ease of Use: Clay masks are one of our favorite things to use because they work so well at balancing the skin. To get the benefits of the clay mask in the shower works for us and the lack of time we have to care for our skin.
- Cooling Sensation: After you rinse off the cleanser, your skin has a cooling sensation to it, feeling super clean.
Something We Weren't Crazy About
- Too Gentle? The first few times we applied the cleanser as the directions stated: applying a thin layer and leaving sit for 2 minutes. Then we followed directions by rinsing off and patting dry. We just didn't feel like we got a thorough cleansing. Once we started massaging the product on our skin after it sat for 2 minutes, we felt our skin reacted better. We recommend you do the same.
Final Thoughts
What's not to love? A great priced product that is eco-friendly, all natural and effective. If you take our advice and massage the product for a deeper cleaning, we can't think of anything that you'd not like about the product.
Feel free to alternate this product every other day with your favorite drugstore cleanser if you're on a budget. You'll still get the great benefits if you use it every other or every third day.
