Every now and then, you tumble upon a skincare product that's so good it feels almost criminal to gatekeep it. In a sea of thousands of moisturizers, finding the one can seem like an impossible task. However, after trying CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, I think I've finally found it.

CeraVe has had its recent moments of fame thanks to its sensitive skin-friendly formulas going viral on TikTok, but many people are still unaware of the magic that is its Moisturizing Cream. The product feels rich, absorbs quickly, and is incredibly effective at maintaining a strong skin barrier and tackling dryness thanks to its ceramide-rich formula.

Michelle Henry, MD, a Manhattan-based dermatologist, explains that ceramides are lipids naturally found in the skin that help keep it strong and healthy, but adds that they wane with age and exposure to environmental stressors. "So, it's really critical that we replenish them with the appropriate products," she says.

While all the CeraVe products are great for sensitive skin, I put this one, in particular, to the test to help with my ultra-dry skin. Here are my thoughts.

This moisturizer is not only extremely hydrating, but it also feels effective on sensitive skin conditions. It's not too heavy or oily and doesn't sit on your skin. Plus, Dr. Henry says it's good for all skin types as ceramides are essential for overall skin health and don't typically cause reactions. "Ceramides aren't considered allergens because they strengthen the skin barrier—they're actually improving the skin's ability to resist chemicals and ingredients that might be considered irritants or allergens," she adds.

The Ingredients: Ceramides and More Ceramides

CeraVe was developed by dermatologists and uses a patented formulation that promises to provide a protective barrier on the skin's surface. According to the brand, this special formulation, called Multivesicular Emulsion Technology, ensures the moisturizer will be time-released throughout the day for complete hydration. CeraVe also uses ceramides, which help retain water in the skin. CeraVe products contain three different ceramides, which are meant to help not only protect the skin but also to keep it hydrated all day long. This is important because, as dermatologist, Mark Strom, MD, puts it: "A compromised skin barrier is deficient in ceramides, which can cause common concerns like dryness, irritation and cracked skin, as well as flare-ups of conditions like eczema. The three essential ceramides found in all CeraVe products (1, 3 and 6-II) are identical to those found in the skin, so they help restore the skin’s natural protective barrier by replenishing ceramides."

Ceramides

Ceramides are lipids that work to keep skin moist, hydrated, and soft. "If you consider the skin cells to be the bricks on a brick wall and the mortar, ceramides envelope those cells and create a waterproof barrier," explains Dr. Henry. "Essentially, they help to make sure that the skin barrier is strong enough to keep the good things inside and the bad things outside."

This cream is especially good for those with extremely dry skin, or skin that dries out halfway through the day. Dr. Strom, explains that this is because of a unique delivery system, called MVE technology, which slowly releases these hydrating ingredients over time for long-lasting moisture. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is also fragrance-free, so those sensitive to fragrance in their skincare products can try it with ease. The product may also work well for people undergoing chemotherapy and experiencing severely dry skin as a result.

How to Apply: The More, The Merrier

This particular product is an all-over body moisturizer; Dr. Strom says he recommends it for use on your face as well as the rest of your body. I know—many of you may shudder at the idea of putting the same cream on your face and body, but it's derm-approved and beloved practice by many loyal users.

In terms of how often you should apply it, Dr. Henry recommends once or twice daily. "Consistency is key. Use the cream daily, typically as a final step in your skincare routine at night. It can also be used in the morning, especially if you have dry skin," she says.

Pro tip: she also recommends applying ceramide creams, such as this CeraVe pick, to slightly damp skin to lock in additional moisture.

First-Person Review:

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is one of those golden treasures in skincare that isn't exactly known by everyone. I had never heard of the product until an appointment with my dermatologist a few years ago. I was on medication for adult acne, and my skin was so dry. He sent me home with a few samples, and after my first use of the cream, I was hooked. I figured that it was a special "dermatologist recommended" moisturizer that I was going to have to shell out lots of money for, but surprisingly enough it was under $20.

But this moisturizer isn't only perfect for dry skin like I had, it may also work great for sensitive skin, psoriasis, eczema, and many other skin conditions. But even if you don't have any special skin concerns, it will likely work for you as an effective and hydrating moisturizer. CeraVe is so gentle that pediatricians often recommend it for babies and children with eczema.

The Results: All-Day Hydration

The 24-hour hydration technology is real. Just remember, there is no SPF in this product, so don't forget to protect yourself with sunscreen.

The Value: Little Risk, Big Reward

With such a low cost for such a high-quality product, it's time to pass the word on. Don't believe us? Take a look at the reviews on Amazon—CeraVe has tons of great reviews, plenty being five-star.
