Henna Singh is the writer and creator of CanadianBeauty.com, a popular beauty blog that was created a year and a half ago. A girl I could definitely have long conversations with over coffee, she sat down with us to dish a bit on her favorite skin care products and life at CanadaBeauty.com.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog, Canadian Beauty, and what keeps you inspired about writing
I'm a girl from Toronto who has loved beauty products for as long as I can remember. When I was really little I even had a fake makeup kit that had plastic lipsticks and shadows in it, and I used to pretend to put on makeup before I left the house! I also love finding the best places to shop and Canadian Beauty reflects all of that.
Canadian Beauty is a site that gives readers news and reviews about beauty products and the cosmetic industry. I profile the best. I find the best mascara, the best shampoo, the best salon, the best spa treatments, you name it, I've probably tried it! The great thing about the beauty industry is that there's always something new. I really feel that products are getting better year by year - rubber bristles to make mascaras better, longer lasting perfumes with better ingredients, and moisturizers that do more than just moisturize. It's easy to get excited when there's always something changing and always something new to try!
As a beauty blogger, you constantly find new products at your finger tips. Tell us what you're using on your skin right now.
Right now I'm using this great new line of products called Canyon Ranch (which is a famous spa in the U.S.). The products are basic but top-of-the-line. I also love using Neutrogena Healthy Skin Lotion for Night and have been using that for years!
Share with us three skin care tips or bits of advice that you've learned along the way.
- Always wash your face before going to bed.
- Use sunscreen all over and daily.
- Use a chemical exfoliant (something with glycolic or lactic acid, for example) rather than a manual one (something with bits of rock or anything else hard). You'll find that it takes care of dead skin more efficiently and evenly.
Take care of your skin and in 20 years, you'll be thankful that you did.
Are you an at-home manicure/pedicure kind of girl, or do you splurge at hit the salon?
For the most part, I'm definitely an at-home manicure/pedicure girl. I usually don't have time to head to a salon, and I find that at most, it takes me 20 to 30 minutes to do my nails at home. Plus, with polish chipping or wearing away in 5 days, it's definitely more economical to do your nails yourself. With the right products and a good technique, you can get professional looking results in a fraction of the price.
All beauty bloggers have their favorite brands, especially after trying so many new ones. Fill us in on what brands have made the "Henna Singh's Favorites" list.
- Neutrogena - their products generally do what they say and most of their daytime moisturizers have SPF which is a must. I can go on forever about their products but it suffices to say that if you're unsure of what to get, go with Neutrogena.
- Olay - their Regenerist moisturizer was proven to reduce wrinkles better than department store brands, and this was in an independent study. They're a big brand with enough money to spend on research, so don't hesitate about choosing them for your skin care solutions.
- Canyon Ranch - this is a new and more pricey skin care line but they have basic products that work really well.
- Dermalogica - Again, this brand is results oriented, and besides that, their products smell amazing! Try the Precleanse and you'll be hooked!
- Clinique has some of the best basic moisturizers on the market. If I had dry skin and wanted something that would hydrate well, I would go with Clinique.
