What is Cellulite?

By , About.com Guide

Is your back side, belly or thighs full of dimples that you'd like to hide? It's called cellulite, and you're not alone. While both men and women can have cellulite, it's been reported that up to 90% of women have cellulite.

What exactly is cellulite? It's actually small pockets of fat trapped under the skin's surface. Think only overweight people can get cellulite? Think again! Cellulite can form on anyone, even stick-thin people.

What causes cellulite? Cellulite is caused a few different ways. First and foremost, just like most medical conditions, take a look at your family. Does your mom have cellulite? What about your sisters? If so, chances are good that you'll have it too. Also, as mentioned above, just by being female, your automatically prone to cellulite. Hormones also are a cellulite-causing factor.

Another factor in cellulite appearance is how sedentary you are. Do you exercise? Walk or bike when you can? Those who take the time to get up and out of their seat are less likely to have large amounts of fat, and thus cellulite.

Do cellulite creams work? Don't expect miracles from any cellulite cream or treatment. While many creams can help temporarily, cellulite creams typically contain ingredients like caffeine that simply plump the skin temporarily. As soon as you quit using the cream, your cellulite will return.

However, cellulite massagers have showed the ability to break down the fat under the skin, thus helping flush out the cellulite. These tools can be used daily in the shower with your shower gel or after your shower with cream or lotion.

What you can do to help diminish the appearance of cellulite. Get off your seat! (or your feet!) Do you sit all day for your job? What about standing constantly in the same spot. While cellulite isn't caused by being overweight, exercising can help reduce or prevent cellulite. Start by taking daily walks and slowly move up and on to other forms of exercise.

Another easy way to reduce the appearance of your cellulite is by self-tanning. A self tanner or bronzer can make your legs appear more smooth and less cottage-cheese like. Follow these self-tanning tips to create a smooth, even application.

And my last tip, even though you might look at your bumpy-lumps and feel self-conscious, these little lumps find there way on most people, even celebrities! (They just have people available to air-brush them out of their pictures before we see them.)

Instead of looking in the mirror with frustration, find a part of your body that you love and flaunt that.
