Skin Authority is back with their latest product line called VitaD Illuminating Duo. Skin Authority partnered with Dole Nutrition Institute to create this 2-piece whole foods, vegan collection (sold individually as well) that claims to boost your skin with Vitamin D. We all know how much of a balance it is to get the vitamin D our skin needs from the sun without taking on the hazards of the UV rays, but I won't lie; for whatever reason the product duo wasn't jumping out at me. It sat on my desk for days before I opened it up and tried it.
After about a week, I started noticing my skin looking clear. I was using my normal moisturizer (The Body Shop's Nutriganics Day Cream) so I knew it had to be the Topical Elixir from Skin Authority. Within 3 weeks, my skin looked amazing.
I reached out to Celeste Hilling, founder of Skin Authority to find out more about this "whole foods" product line and how it works. Whole foods aren't something we typically think of when we think of skin care, but the benefits to my skin were undeniable.
What does “whole-food source” mean? Whole foods are unprocessed and unrefined, or processed and refined as little as possible. Whole foods typically do not contain added ingredients, such as salt, carbohydrates, or fat. Examples of whole foods include beans, fruits, vegetables and non-homogenized dairy products. When you eat a whole food - like an apple - you get all the vitamins, probiotics, minerals, etc. that are in the apple. Nature intended for us to consume food in its whole form because all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes are bound together and work synergistically to deliver the nutrition your body needs.
In the VitaD DUO, we use a whole food version of mushrooms to create a perfect digestion cocktail. Whole foods are safe for everyone - kids, seniors, those with cancer - because there are no chemicals inside.
Does the DUO replace any Vitamin D supplements, vitamins, etc.? Vitamin D is made in one place - the skin. Less than 1% of the nutrients we ingest ever makes its way to the skin. In addition to boosting internal levels of D, we need to also insure our skin is receiving benefits as well. The VitaD DUO is an easy, effective way to add Vitamin D into a daily routine without the hassle factor. The unique ‘inside out’ delivery system offers a complete nutrition sandwich that is safe for everyone.
Even if you get enough Vitamin D internally, less than 1% of what is ingested ever makes its way to the skin. This of it this way: getting enough Vitamin D into your body is like having a never-ending gas tank that can’t be filled. If you add a few drops of gas to an empty gas tank, your car won’t start. You have to put in enough gas to get the engine circulating.
Same with you: your body has to have Vitamin D to make Vitamin D! There is not a reserve of Vitamin D; you constantly have to replenish it. Because it’s made in the skin, you have to refill Vitamin D at topical and internal levels daily.
What benefits are you finding from people using the serum directly on their skin vs. those who simply take Vitamin D supplements? This is a great question. When using the Elixir, the skin becomes very clear and the toned is evened out. The skin develops a natural, healthy & balanced glow. When people have inflammatory conditions - acne, rosacea, etc. - their skin is calmed. The calming effect makes sense because the products balance your immune functions.
Would one get any benefits if they just used one product, or must both be used in combination? Absolutely, each product stands alone in producing benefits. But, I want people to see the acceleration of benefits by using the two together. The VitaD Fortified™ Topical Elixir is a multi-action formula that provides a topical dose of Vitamin D and essential nutrients to nourish the skin for firm, bright luminosity. The product infuses skin with essential skin nutrients including, A, D2, D3, E, and K.
The VitaD Fortified™ Whole Food Spice Powder provides an all-natural, plant-based Vitamin D source in its whole form for more nutritional impact that works with any diet – including vegan or raw. Each teaspoon (1.42g) equals 600 IU of Vitamin D, making it easier for anyone to reach their recommended daily value. Easily added to soups, sauces, casseroles, dressings, entrees, pasta, rice, oatmeal, smoothies, etc.
In the spice jar, the only ingredient is mushrooms. Does the answer really lie in mushrooms? How does the concentrated form of mushrooms in your product differ from a diet rich in mushrooms? The mushrooms used in the Spice Powder are super-Vitamin-D enhanced. They are not an off-the-shelf mushroom. An average mushroom contains Vitamin D, but in much lower concentrations than the ones we are using. With traditional mushrooms, you would have to eat a lot of them and they would have to be cooked, not raw. What I love about the Powder is that you can easily add it to what you are doing; no behavior change necessary!
Are these products vegetarian or vegan? Yes! The products are 100% vegan. They are safe for everyone - babies, seniors, those with diseases - because there are no chemicals inside.
Does the VitaD offer any moisture benefits? Yes, it does offer moisture and one of the most noticeable features is the luminous, even-toned skin.
Should this replace your anti-aging or acne serum? It will complement those products. You are building up the immune system with the VitaD Elixir, so that it will fight conditions including rosacea, acne, etc. In the interim, you’ll want to treat acne with specific products; from Skin Authority, I recommend the Acne & Oil Control. With the VitaD Elixir, you can eventually alternate it with your acne and anti-aging products.
In what order should this be applied to our skin? I recommend that that VitaD Elixir is applied at night as most of your repair happens between 10 p.m. and midnight. You’ll want to apply after resurfacing and before applying serums or creams.
