1 in 5 Americans will get Skin Cancer in their lifetime. One American dies of melanoma almost every hour. Think about that for a minute. How many people are sitting in cubicles next to you at work? How big is your family? How many people could potentially be a skin cancer statistic in your life?
Jennifer Garner, Miranda Cosgrove, and Gabrielle Union have teamed with Neutrogena and The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery to promote safe sun exposure and skin care. (Watch the 1 minute video) They've created a website packed with useful information that includes an interactive mole exam and a free self-screening kit that's simple to download.
They've de-bunked the top 10 skin care myths and I bet you probably believe one or more of them! The one I hear most is #4- "People who tan easily and rarely burn will not get cancer." There are skin cancer facts, facts about UVA/UVB rays and a great description about what sun damage really does to your skin.
If you've never had your skin examined by a dermatologist, you'll want to check out their free 2011 skin cancer screenings with a list of partners in each state. You can even find coupons for Neutrogena sunscreeen.
I can pretty much guarantee that I drive my friends and family crazy when it comes to sunscreen, especially when it comes to my kids, but I am passionate about the realities of the sun. Don't get me wrong, I know the sun is an amazing mood booster; a free feel-good part of life, but like all good things, there has to be some basic safety rules.
I encourage you to look at this site, really let these facts sink in and adjust how you see the sun this summer. And share it with your friends and coworkers! Lets see if we can reduce the skin cancer statistics starting today.
